Sun Protection Factor (SPF) Knowledge

Sunscreen is the top recommended skincare product to apply when heading outside. However, most people are not aware that higher SPF does not necessarily mean proportionately more protection.

Sunscreen Protection
Against UVB
SPF 0 (None) Blocks 0%
SPF 15 Blocks 93%
SPF 30 Blocks 97%
SPF 50 Blocks 98%

Assuming it takes you 10-20mins to burn in the sun, applying an SPF 30 sunscreen would protect you from burning for approximately 300-600 minutes  (a factor of 30 times longer). This is a rough estimate that depends on skin type, intensity of sunlight and amount of sunscreen used. SPF is a measure of protection from amount of UVB exposure and it is not meant to help you determine duration of exposure.
